6. Fruit: Healthy or Not?

(Pic above gives u idea of carb counts in 100g of that fruit)

Tell someone you can’t eat fruit because you are low carbing and they are bound to exclaim “But why? Fruits are so healthy! How can you not eat fruit?” Tell an obese person that they shouldn’t be consuming bananas daily and they’l tell you but bananas are so healthy + rich in potassium. What they don’t realise is that they are also high in sugars and can make you fatter. Potassium could be better obtained from consuming avocados!!!

They fail to understand that sugar (fructose and glucose) from fruit can shut down fat burning. When your body burns glucose (for fuel) there’s more chance of it fat -storing than fat- burning esp when you overcarb. It can also increase your hunger and slow down your weight loss and increase you in weightgain.

Many Low-carbers abstain from eating fruit when they guard their carb consumption strictly, esp: fruits, sweets, soda, root vegetables, grains such as wheat, barley, maize, rice etc and grain products such as pastas and breads.
Its best to spend carb allotments wisely and save them for what one really desires to eat. Whether or not one can eat fruit in their diet depends on a lot of things such as current goals, activity levels, health etc.

A person who eats 100-120 grams of carbs per day can eat several pieces of fruit per day without going over their daily carb allotment but someone who is on a very low-carb diet with under 50 grams per day, doesn’t really have much room. For them it could be better spent eating plenty of low-carb vegetables… which are much more nutritious, calorie for calorie.

To get ones body into nutritional ketosis (fat burning) one often has to reduce carbs, usually below 50 grams per day which means abstaining from fruit for many (berries are an exception). To be able to count carbs one needs to have carb counters to refer to, or google carb counts in foods or fruit or check packaged food for carb counts per serving.

Some do it for health reasons such as obesity, diabetes, epilepsy or other health concerns. Others simply feel best eating that way. There’s no reason to discourage these people from carb counting or for avoiding fruit as there is no nutrient in fruits that you can’t get from your vegetables.

But even though some low-carbers may do best limiting fruit, the same doesn’t  apply to everyone. For many fruits are healthy, unprocessed foods with fiber, vitamins and minerals when eaten in moderation. They are also MUCH healthier options to the processed junk that most people are putting in their bodies every day and can definitely be part of a healthy, real food based diet.
